Chestnuts season is coming soon 2011

Just to let you know the chestnuts season is coming soon. Depending on the year and weather conditions chestnuts start falling on the ground by the end of March or early April. It has been a cool summer and the burs still look green, we hope for a few hot days to ripen the chestnuts.
We anticipated that chestnuts would start to drop in a few weeks we will let you know by email when we open for chestnuts picking.
WHERE: 12 Naylors Road, Clematis (Melway 127/B3) (end of Naylors Road, drive through the green gates and turn left. (If possible please park off the driveway)
WHEN: Weekend (8:00 am to 5:00 pm) during the season (April/May).
WEATHER: Dry weather is good for picking as it is easier to pick and to handle/store them after picking.
NOTES: You are welcome to call us before coming to make sure it is not raining in Clematis and there are chestnuts on the ground for picking.

Picking: Chestnuts have prickly sharp burs. Care is required and you should bring work leather gloves, fully-cover clothing, hat, comfortable footwear and water bottles. Picking buckets and bags are provided.
Driving: From Wellington Road or from Belgrave-Gembrook Road (going toward Emerald), just pass Paradise Hotel about 50m, stay on left-lane & turn left into Edenmont Road, cross a railway line, follow the winding road for 800m then turn left into Naylors Road.

Storing: In paper, net bag or cardboard box, keeps in cool/airy place or best in refrigerator. Freeze to keep longer (not suitable for roasting).
Boiling: Boil for about 40 minutes; check to ensure nuts are cooked
Roasting: Make a cut on chestnuts (to avoid nutshell explode in oven), boil for a few minutes, roast in oven/grill at medium heat for about 40 minutes.
Peeling for soup: Cuts one end, simmer in water for few minutes to soften, peel while nuts still warm.
